Pre-holiday strike fails to disrupt Cebu transport system – LTFRB

CEBU: There was no major disruption in public transport amid the strike initiated by Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) in this capital city on Friday to protest the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program (PUVMP).

Eduardo Montealto Jr., regional director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board – Central Visayas (LTFRB-7), said the protesters who marched from different streets in the city to their regional field office on Echavez Street did not even reach 20.

‘They marched in the city streets but they failed to disrupt the transportation system. Both the traditional and modern PUJs (public utility jeepneys) continued serving their routes. It’s a usual pre-holiday rush in Metro Cebu streets today (Friday),’ Montealto told the Philippine News Agency.

Montealto said the protest was peaceful.

‘That is their right (to hold protest) as long they hold it peacefully. The government is here to assist them if they want to embrace modernization,
‘ he added.

He reiterated that all transport groups in Cebu that are yet to consolidate into cooperatives or corporations are welcome to process their applications even during the holidays as special teams will be deployed.

If they file their application for consolidation before the Dec. 31 deadline set by the national government, Montealto said the requirements may be submitted upon resumption of government work next year.
